Ghent Belgium 11—18 July 2016
Two international choral events in the heart of the vibrant historical city of Ghent. Dynamic ateliers to suit different tastes plus a daily dose of concerts, culture, canals, coffee and cuberdons. For adult singers, youth choirs, singing families, young conductors; Ghent offers something for everyone!



1. Choral Music "From the New World"
- dir. Brady Allred (US)

Contemporary and traditional choral music from the US. A varied menu of diverse styles and musical periods. 
For SATB > 18y. Level: B*

Brady ALLRED (US) is the Artistic Director of the Salt Lake Choral Artists, an organization of seven choirs. He travels the choral world as workshop leader, jury member and teacher of master classes in choral conducting.

Inspiring and universal music for young singers. 
For SA 12-18y. Level: B*

Jean-Marie PUISSANT (FR) is Music Director of several choirs and orchestras in France and worked with the Choeur National des Jeunes (ACJ). He is a regular workshop leader at international events and teaches master classes choral conducting.

4. Joint crossover atelier
- dir. Marleen Annemans (BE)

'Russian Folksongs' by composer Kurt Bikkembergs will become the elegant background to a life performance by young Flemish dancers. For all participants of ateliers 1 and 2.

Marleen ANNEMANS (BE) teaches music in high school and conducts adult and youth choirs. She focuses on functional movement and expression in choral singing. For ECA-EC she lead an atelier and Study Tour at Europa Cantat Junior (Nevers-Pärnu) and at Europa Cantat Pecs.

Open Singing

Daily Open Singing with all participants, conducted by the atelier leaders and coordinated by Marleen Annemans and Jeroen Beckers (BE)

Musical Program for Children

Singing (grand)parents can bring their (grand)children (7-12y) to this Singing Week. The children follow a 4-day mini-singing week alongside Flemish children and with experienced Flemish conductors. The repertoire will be joyful, easy and international. Meals, accommodation and leisure time are spent with the (grand)parents.

Choir-to-Choir concerts

Small concerts will be organised for participating choirs.

Course for Starting Choral Conductors

Are you dreaming of becoming a choral conductor? Here is your chance to have a go and feel what it is like to sculpture the sound of a choir. Do not be afraid, this course is meant for 'absolute beginners'.

You will learn about the basics of choral conducting and vocal training and have a go yourself at conducting in practical sessions. You will also visit the ateliers of the International Singing Week Flanders and learn 'tips and tricks' from experienced conductors.

For first- time- conductors, 16-33y
Young starting choral conductors, young singers who think about becoming a choral conductor, music students who want to learn about choral conducting and vocal training

Tourist information
You will be staying in the heart of the city of Ghent. Museums, historical sites, cosy cafés and shopping streets are all within walking distance.
The British newspaper The Guardian has recently put Ghent in the spotlight in its list of alternative city breaks in Europe, as Ghent offers “a buzzing creative scene alongside the historical city center”.


Ateliers, meals and accommodation are all in one location: the Sint-Bavo boarding school, situated in the shadows of Ghent’s main Cathedral. Accommodation is in basic single rooms and some double rooms. Showers and toilets are in the corridors. Wi-Fi available in some of the rooms and in the communal areas. This accommodation is ideal for the young and the young at heart.
There is also limited hotel accommodation available through the organisers.
